About this novel

Tum Saath Ho Jab Apne (Urdu: تم ساتھ ہو جب اپنے) by Hamna Mohsin is a short Urdu thriller romance that begins with a series of wrong-number calls. The calls grow stranger, and the opening ends with a kidnapping on the way to school.

The story opens with an irritated “Hello? Hello? Who is this? What kind of joke is this? I’ve told you a thousand times there’s no Maria here – why do you keep bothering me?” Abeeha snaps as soon as she picks up her phone. “So much anger isn’t good for your health, Maria,” the voice on the other end replies. “Just shut up! My name isn’t Maria – don’t ever call this number again,” she says, and cuts the call.

This has been happening for a week. Every hour, calls and messages come from the same number, and Abeeha is fed up. After her intermediate, she chose teaching and now works at a small school near her home. Her family is well-off, with servants and plenty of money, but she has always wanted a small job of her own.

Her friend Samia asks what she plans to do about the wrong number. Abeeha says she’s thinking of changing her SIM to get rid of this pest. Samia suggests she ask her aunt to get her a new one, but Abeeha explains the problem: her mother is very possessive – if she hears about the wrong-number calls, she’ll take away the mobile altogether and make her stay home. Samia has a simpler idea: bring your ID card tomorrow; there’s a shop near the school where she can get a new SIM. Abeeha smiles, relieved.

That night at ten, just as she is about to sleep, her phone vibrates again – the same number, after countless missed calls since morning. “Why didn’t you take my calls since morning, my queen?” a commanding voice asks. “Are you mad? Don’t you dare call again!” she shouts. “Maria, put the phone down, and be ready for your punishment tomorrow,” he replies. The next morning at seven, as she walks to school, a black-windowed car pulls up beside her and she is dragged inside before she can even react.

Hamna Mohsin keeps the pace fast and tense, leaving readers wondering who this stranger is and why he insists on calling her Maria.
