Mera Kya Qasoor (Urdu: میرا کیا قصور) by Muniba Asif is a long Urdu revenge romance about Ayat, a happy young woman about to get married. She becomes the target of a man determined to punish her father for his past, and the title asks what her fault is.

The novel opens on Ayat’s last day at university. She is overjoyed – her wedding is set for this very month, and everyone congratulates her. Sitting with her friends, she listens to Nimra tease her while munching chips: “Ayat, don’t forget all of us once you’re caught up with Zohaib Bhai!” Sehar joins in. Ayat hugs them both: “No, yaar, you’re my life – how could I ever forget you?”

Then the story turns darker. In an office, a man named Faraz reports to his boss: “Sir, we’ve found Hashim’s daughter. Here is her picture.” He places it on the table. Her name is Ayat; today is her last day at university, and in a week she will be married. Ashar, who has been studying a file, looks up, looks at the picture and smiles meaningfully. “Alright – pick up this girl,” he orders, and Faraz leaves.

Alone, Ashar stares at Ayat’s photograph with hatred. “No, Hashim,” he vows, “I won’t let any happiness enter your life. Your daughter will pay for your sins with every drop of her blood. No songs of joy will ever be heard in Hashim Villa again – only mourning.”

The title asks the question at the centre of the story: “What is my fault?” Ayat knows nothing of her father’s past, yet she is about to be pulled into a war that isn’t hers. Muniba Asif sets up an intense story of revenge, innocence and the cost of one man’s mistakes, and readers can expect a tense, emotional ride as the truth about Hashim slowly comes out.

Readers should know that the story centres on a kidnapping and a revenge plot, so some early chapters are dark in tone, though the focus stays on Ayat’s innocence and the question of justice.
