About this novel
Hai Ab Iqrar Ka Mausam (Urdu: ہے اب اقرار کا موسم) by Hamna Mohsin is a complete Urdu revenge-marriage novel with a shocking wedding night. Maham discovers that the man she married for love has been planning to punish her for her mother’s past.
It is the first night of their marriage, and Maham waits for Umair with beautiful dreams in her eyes. Umair was her university class fellow, and she married him by choice, with both families’ consent. The door opens, he walks in, comes to the bed and lifts her ghoonghat – and then he slaps her hard. Maham stares at him in shock. “Umair, tum… tum yeh kya…” she stammers.
His answer stuns her. He isn’t just Umair – he is Umair Afandi, her mamu’s son. She was only a year old back then, he says, but he was five. After his father died of a heart attack, her mother – his phuppo – made life hell for him and his mother. He remembers everything. He has married her to make her pay for each one of those wrongs, so she will suffer the way his mother suffered. He storms out of the room.
شادی کی پہلی رات، اٹھایا گیا گھونگھٹ، اور ایک پرانے بدلے کی آگ۔
The next scene shows Umair at a hotel with his best friend Hadi, who can’t believe Umair has called him out for coffee on his wedding night. “This isn’t a marriage, it’s the start of Maham’s ruin,” Umair says angrily, and he pours out his past. For ten years he lived in a house where his mother was humiliated every day by his phuppo. His father had married by his own choice, and Umair’s grandmother never accepted her daughter-in-law because she wasn’t of their standard. After the grandmother’s death, his widowed phuppo came to live with them with her one-year-old daughter, poisoned his father’s mind against his mother, and after his father’s death took over the house and pushed his mother out.
Hamna Mohsin opens with anger and a very dark start to a marriage. Readers should know that the early chapters include domestic violence; the story focuses on the hurt behind Umair’s revenge and on Maham, who knows nothing of the past she is being punished for. The title suggests a season of confession and understanding will eventually come.
