About this novel
Khoya Sab To Paya Rab (Urdu: کھویا سب تو پایا رب) by Mariya Awan is a complete Urdu spiritual novel that opens in a madrasa with a lesson on the soul. Its title means when I lost everything, I found my Rabb, and that journey from loss to faith is at the heart of the story.
The novel begins with a simple question. “Aabish Baaji, what is the reality of the rooh?” Maryam asks innocently. Aabish lovingly kisses the Quran, places it on the stand, and answers: in reality, Maryam, everything else is an illusion – the soul has come from the spiritual world. The soul belongs to its Rabb, and He places it in a body for a test. But as soon as the soul enters the body, the body becomes proud and starts thinking the soul is its servant. The Rabb gives the body years of chances to recognise Him; whoever recognises Him is successful, and whoever treats the soul as a slave is ruined, because the soul belongs only to its Creator. When the soul leaves, the body that thought itself so powerful becomes completely helpless.
Maryam thinks for a moment: so the body has no reality? Aabish explains that this is our test – the body needs the soul, and we’ve been sent into this body for a short time to understand the truth and recognise our Rabb. That’s why people say we should do things that please the soul, so that it isn’t pained when it leaves. And how do we please it? By worshipping Allah with every part of the body. Not just ibadat, Aabish adds, but also caring for His creation and doing whatever He has commanded. Success requires effort, she reminds her student; you can’t pass any exam without hard work, but Allah has promised success to those who strive, and He always keeps His promise.
روح رب کی ہے، جسم صرف ایک امتحان۔
We learn that Aabish is not only a hafiza but has also completed the aalima course. She teaches in Madrasa-e-Islam, a well-known institution in the area, where she once studied herself. Every student loves her. The madrasa provides both religious and worldly education free of charge, and also offers housing for poor and orphaned girls.
Mariya Awan writes this one as a gentle, faith-centred story, and the title suggests a journey of loss that ends in finding Allah.
