About this novel

Hum Haar Gaye Tum Jeete (Urdu: ہم ہار گئے تم جیتے) by Mariya Awan is a long Urdu family romance set in the Malik household, where elders decide everything. Cousin engagements are fixed from childhood there and the grandfather’s word is law, and the novel follows what that means for the young couples.

The novel opens by introducing Sikandar Malik and his three children: two sons, Arshad and Sarmad, and an only daughter, Bushra. Sikandar Malik and his wife raised their children very well; in his own words, he always fed his children with a golden spoon but kept a lion’s eye on them. The whole family calls him Agha Jaan.

He married his elder son Arshad to Salma, his sister-in-law’s daughter, and their only son is Azaan Malik. Two years after Arshad, the younger son Sarmad was married to Shazia, Sikandar Malik’s niece, and they have two daughters, Haniya Malik and Saniya Malik. Arshad and Sarmad’s only sister, Bushra, married the son of Sikandar Malik’s friend, and Mehrunnisa is their only child. Sikandar Malik built his business through day-and-night hard work, and when his sons finished their studies, they joined it and helped it grow. Everyone lives together with love and without disagreement, mainly because Agha Jaan still runs the whole house – whatever he says is accepted without question, and his decisions always turn out to be right.

بچپن کی منگنی، آغا جان کا فیصلہ، اور دل کی ایک الگ کہانی۔

Azaan’s engagement was fixed to Haniya in childhood, and he is three years older than her. As they grew up, they began to understand the relationship, and soon Azaan started to love Haniya, the eldest daughter of the family, a sensible girl whose soft smile and gentle manner made everyone love her. Haniya’s younger sister Saniya, four years younger, is the life of the house, and a year younger than her is Mehrunnisa, everyone’s darling. Then, without warning, tragedy strikes: Bushra’s husband Waqar suddenly dies of a heart attack. Bushra’s in-laws lived in Islamabad, and when she was widowed, Mehrunnisa was only about ten years old. Agha Jaan’s wife Fatima can’t bear the news of her daughter’s loss.

Mariya Awan sets up a large, close-knit family with fixed engagements, and the title – “we lost, you won” – hints that not every heart will follow Agha Jaan’s plans. A good long read for fans of cousin romance and joint-family drama.
