Jadoo Ki Nagri by Jiya Mughal is an Urdu fantasy tale set in an old kingdom ruled by a just king who adores his queen. He builds her a magical island as a gift of love, and the title means the land of magic.

Hundreds of years ago, far across the land, there was a kingdom known as Riyasat-e-Usmania. It was so vast, the writer says, that if Raja Tahmasp rode out on his fastest horse, it would take him a full month to cross it. The raja is fair and kind, and loved by his people. Every year, on the last day of the year, he holds a grand celebration for them. Whatever profit the kingdom has made that year is spent on this jashan, and rich and poor alike join in the music, the fair and the craftsmen’s stalls. Poor young men and women are even married off with the consent of their families during the festival.

For several years, the raja has been quietly choosing the kingdom’s most skilled craftsmen and sending them to a secret place. He is preparing a special gift for the twentieth birthday of his queen, Rani Qudsia, whom he lovingly calls “Jan-e-Aziz.” Jiya Mughal describes her as so beautiful that when she smiles, the raja forgets everything else, and the whole kingdom knows how much he loves her.

Finally the day arrives. Gifts and prayers pour in for the queen from every corner of the kingdom. When the people have gone, the raja asks her to close her eyes. Holding her hands, he leads her through a hidden door in the palace and, when she opens her eyes, she gasps. In front of them lies a breathtaking island with a clear river, golden trees, flowers, birds, glittering lights and a jewelled throne. The raja tells her that the best craftsmen of the kingdom have spent years building it only for her. From this dreamlike beginning, the title promises that this jadoo ki nagri holds much more than beauty.
