About this novel

The first pages begin with a short poem by the writer about hanging on the gallows of waiting and startling at every footstep, and the story picks up exactly that feeling. Fifteen days have passed. Her husband promised he would be back within a week, but eight more days have gone by with no sign of him. She jumps at every sound, she cannot sleep without him, and she has cut herself off from everything except his memories. Every evening, in the cold breeze of changing weather, she sits on the lawn waiting, because he always used to come home late at night, leaving all his work to look after her.

Night falls and she is still sitting in the same place. Each time he left, he gave her a thousand pieces of advice, and each time she forgot all of them and built a wall of his yaadein around herself until the days of judai were over. A few lines of poetry, about the heart asking for a little more time to beat with him, to live and die in his name, close this part.

Then the mood changes completely. On a busy morning a college van is honking outside, the driver uncle looks bored, and Haisha grabs her things and rushes for the stairs. Her mother, Farheen Begum, calls after her to come back and finish her breakfast, and Haisha answers, “Mom please, college mein kuch kha lungi, uncle wait kar rahe hain.” Hamna Mehar moves between deep emotion and light everyday moments, and these first six episodes leave you wanting to know how both threads come together.

انتظار کی ہر گھڑی میں بس ایک ہی دعا ہے کہ وہ لوٹ آئے۔
