Hum Nawa Tu Hum Raaz Mera By Nishaal Aziz

About this novel

Hum Nawa Tu Hum Raaz Mera (Urdu: ہم نوا تو ہم راز میرا, “you, my companion and my confidant”) by Nishaal Aziz is a long, cheerful Urdu family romance full of cousins and late nights. It opens at half past two in the morning, with Mishal Ijaz Haider pacing the lounge because her cousin Altamash still hasn’t come home.

For half an hour Mishal, in a plain yellow shirt and white shalwar, has been walking up and down, twisting the ends of her dupatta. The rest of the household watch from the sofa: Agha Jan, Hadi, Noor and Hania. They’re half worried and half thrilled, because it isn’t often they get to see Mishal take Altamash Zaman Haider to task. They also know her anger never lasts more than two minutes once he starts talking.

آدھی رات، ایک غصے والی کزن، اور ایک ایسا لڑکا جس کی باتوں میں سب کا غصہ پگھل جاتا ہے۔

When Mishal finally stops, it’s to look at the clock and announce that tonight there will be no forgiveness. It’s half past two, half the city is asleep, and where on earth does he go at this hour? She sends Hania and Noor off to bed. They refuse, because a scene like this doesn’t come every day, and beg her not to fall for his talk this time. Mishal insists she won’t. He’s twenty-five, she fumes, he has been failing his FSc for three years, his parents are worried sick, and he hasn’t an ounce of shame.

Right in the middle of her speech, the door opens quietly. Altamash slips in, locks it behind him and puts a finger to his lips to keep Hania quiet. Hania promptly calls out, “Tami Bhai!”

That warm, teasing household is the heart of the novel, and its 880 pages have plenty of room for the romance that grows out of it.
