Pachtawa E Inteqam (Urdu: پچھتاوا انتقام) by Nishaal Aziz is a complete Urdu revenge-action novel that begins with a childhood tragedy. It then moves to a secret team working for the city’s commissioner, where that old loss is never far from the surface.

The prologue is dark and painful. A gang of armed men breaks into a home, and a thirteen-year-old boy clings to his older sister in fear as she begs them to let them go. The men grab him and drag his sister inside, where his mother had already been taken. The boy fights and screams with all his strength, but he is held back, too young to understand everything that is happening and powerless to stop it. When the men finally come out, laughing, he notices one detail he will never forget: a small lion tattoo on one man’s wrist. Then smoke rises – his home, where he had lived happily with his widowed mother and sister, has been set on fire. The novel keeps the focus on the boy’s horror and loss rather than on graphic detail, but readers should know the opening deals with violence against a family.

The story then jumps forward. A man glances at the clock and remembers that today he has to set out on a mission the commissioner has given him; his team has already prepared everything. Just outside the city, in an isolated spot, stands a sleek building of mirror-like glass, far larger inside than it looks, surrounded by high walls and armed guards. Inside, a huge screen shows CCTV footage of important places across the city, and a dozen officers in civilian clothes work in front of it. Behind them, Major Taimoor paces the room, reminding them that the group has rules, and that anyone who follows them properly will be rewarded – until he notices someone isn’t listening and snaps for attention.

Nishaal Aziz sets up a story of trauma, justice and the question the title raises: does revenge bring peace, or only regret? Fans of action-thriller Urdu novels with secret missions and a determined hero will be drawn in quickly.
