About this novel

Aah e Muhabbat (Urdu: آہِ محبت, “the sigh of love”) by Nishaal Aziz is a long Urdu romance that begins outside a restaurant at closing time. Quiet Sawera tells her friend Shanze that she won’t be walking home with her tonight, and the reason changes her life.

Shanze and Sawera became friends working as waitresses in the same restaurant. In all the months Shanze has known her, Sawera has never even spoken to a boy. So it’s a shock when Sawera, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and visibly nervous, says some friends are throwing a party at a club and she’s going. She has been acting oddly for days. When Shanze asks whether her mother knows, Sawera insists she has permission, sweating and fumbling for her handkerchief. Shanze decides not to push, and that’s the night the trouble starts.

ایک ریسٹورنٹ، دو سہیلیاں، اور ایک رات جو سب کچھ بدل گئی۔

Shanze has her own story too. Since she started work there, a young man called Shadil has followed her about like a deewana. She never encouraged him. What won her over was that, instead of pestering her the way other boys might, he went straight to her parents and told them he liked her. Now he turns up again as the restaurant is closing, and when she asks why he keeps coming when he knows she won’t leave with him, he says with complete confidence that he only came to see her.

The novel sets a gentle, respectful romance beside a friendship that’s about to be tested, and at 822 pages there’s plenty of room for both.
