About this novel
Hostel Ki Kahani by Umm e Shifa is a short Urdu horror story about two best friends who move into a hostel in Hyderabad. Strange sounds begin on their very first night, and the khaufnak story grows from there.
The writer opens with a friendly note: this is her first novel, she apologises for any mistakes, and she has long wanted to share a story like this. She asks readers to encourage her, saying she doesn’t know if she writes well, but she will keep trying.
“Yaar, tumhein pata hai main aaj bohat khush hoon,” Reema tells her friend Taniya. Her father has finally given permission for the hostel. The two have been friends since childhood and are now moving to a hostel for their studies. It was not easy, because Reema is her father’s only daughter and he wanted her to stay where he could see her. Taniya is just as excited, and since she lives nearby, the girls agree to set off together the next morning.
At six the next day, Reema is up early, fresh and ready, while her mother makes breakfast. Her father keeps saying his heart feels uneasy and asks her to take care of herself, and Reema laughs that he is worrying for nothing, because Taniya will be with her. Taniya arrives, and after saying goodbye to the family, the two friends set off.
By the time they reach the hostel in Hyderabad, it is already night, and they go straight to their room, which has already been booked. While Reema is freshening up in the washroom, she suddenly hears the jingle of anklets behind her, as if someone has walked past. When she turns around, no one is there. She tells herself it is just tiredness, plans to rest and switches off the light. Then, around three in the morning, with total silence everywhere and all the girls asleep in their rooms, the real horror begins. Umm e Shifa keeps the story simple, quick and spooky.
نئی جگہ کی خاموشی میں کبھی کبھی پرانی کہانیاں چھپی ہوتی ہیں۔
