About this novel
Aankhen by Awab Ali is a short Urdu horror story told by a village girl about her neighbour’s beautiful eyes. Those eyes bring frightening events into her life, and the title simply means eyes.
“Mera naam Saima hai,” the narrator begins, and she insists that the story she is about to tell is completely true. It happened to a girl in her village, from her own neighbourhood, named Saniya. Saniya was very beautiful, especially her eyes. They were so lovely that no one who saw them could stop themselves from praising her, and the writer tells us that everything that happened to her later happened because of those eyes.
Saniya’s family has five members: her mother, Maryam, her father, Zubair Butt, her younger sister Shana, who is three years younger, and her brother Rehan, two years older than Saniya, who is eighteen. One day Saniya’s friend Zubaida comes to invite her to her brother’s wedding, since today is the first day of the festivities. Saniya rarely goes anywhere. Whenever there is a function, her mother or Shana usually go instead, so she says no. Zubaida is hurt and leaves saying she will never come to their house again. Saniya’s mother scolds her for being rude, so in the evening Saniya agrees to go after all.
As evening falls, both sisters get ready. Their brother has gone out, and it is almost time for the Maghrib azaan, so their mother decides to take them herself. The walk to Zubaida’s house takes about ten minutes, and the road passes right by a graveyard. Halfway there, their mother says her legs are aching and she will wait, telling the girls to walk ahead and keep their faces properly covered. The two sisters set off alone along the road beside the graveyard. Awab Ali uses a simple village setting to build real suspense.
