The novel opens with a nightmare. In the dark, Naina is running as fast as she can, feeling someone chasing her. She trips, falls and hits her head, and when she looks up, a shadowy figure is dragging a body. In the moonlight she sees that the body is her own. A terrifying shape rushes towards her while a voice calls her name from far away, “Naina, Naina, Hoorain Naina,” and then someone throws water on her face. She wakes up soaked, sees she is safe in her room, and thanks Allah.

Meanwhile Zain is driving aimlessly, tears in his eyes and his hair a mess. He cannot believe what has just happened: the girl he loved has left him halfway. All he can hear is Aleena’s voice, and he feels he cannot live without her. He stops at a roadside dhaba where he often comes to drink tea and calm himself down.

A few hours earlier, Zain had met Aleena, smartly dressed in a brown leather jacket. She told him her “good news”: she has got admission to the School of Fashion Design in New York and is leaving next week, for two years. Zain reminded her that their wedding is next month, but Aleena was clear that she won’t give up her dream for a wedding, and if he won’t wait or come along, she will leave anyway. “It’s over,” she said, and walked away.

In another home, it is a cold December morning. Hareem drags her sister Hoorain out of bed, because guests are coming. Hoorain calls Saad, who happily tells her that his parents are coming to fix their wedding date. Meesha Haider sets heartbreak and happiness side by side in these opening pages.

کچھ خواب ستاروں کی طرح دور ہوتے ہیں، مگر دل پھر بھی انہیں چھونا چاہتا ہے۔
