Keh Hum Naraz Hain Tum Sy by Meesha Haider

About this novel

Keh Hum Naraz Hain Tum Sy (Urdu: کہ ہم ناراض ہیں تم سے) by Meesha Haider is an emotional romance that opens with heartbreak and then goes back to show how it came to this. The title means “because we are upset with you”.

The first scene is painful. Varda stands with a phone pressed to her ear, tears streaming down her face. On the other end, Mustafa tells her that she’ll never see him again after today, that there will be no Mustafa in her life anymore. He loved her deeply, he says, but he has lost her, and he asks her to forgive him. Terrified, Varda runs to his room. She finds him in a terrible state, and before she can reach him the night is shattered by a gunshot. In that single moment, the writer tells us, Varda’s whole world was torn apart. She had wanted to spend her life with Mustafa, but her own life was never in her hands.

ایک فون کال، ایک لمحہ — اور وردہ کی پوری دنیا بدل گئی۔

Then the novel steps back to happier, more ordinary days. Mustafa stands in front of the mirror, a handsome, slightly arrogant young man in jeans and a white shirt, checking his reflection with a confident smile. He comes downstairs to the breakfast table, where his parents are waiting. His father tells him that his studies are now finished and it’s time to take over the family business. At twenty-five, Mustafa listens with his usual mix of pride and carelessness, unaware of where his life is heading.

Meesha Haider frames the story with tragedy, then lets the reader discover the love, pride and family pressure behind it. Readers should be aware that the novel deals with grief and a very dark moment early on.
