Ek Jadughar Ki Dastan By Mian Fazeehat

About this novel

Ek Jadugar Ki Dastan by Mian Fazeehat is a funny, satirical Urdu story about a man who wants to learn magic to get rich. He hopes to make money the easy way, and the fake amils he meets along the way are the real joke of the story.

The story is told in the first person. “Hamesha se meri khwahish thi ke main jadoo seekh loon,” the narrator begins. After all, what can’t a person do with magic? Like any ordinary man, he dreams of money, a car, a bungalow, servants at his door, and ruling over everyone like a shahenshah. The trouble is that all of this needs years of hard work, and he wants a shortcut. As he sees it, there are only two shortcuts: magic, or illegal ways. Illegal ways usually end in death, and he is interested in money, not dying, so magic it is.

His search takes him everywhere, from jungles and deserts to mosques, shrines, amils and tantriks, but all he finds is fraud and new ways of being cheated. Three years and a lot of money later, he is still empty-handed and still determined.

For more than a week now he has been visiting an amil with a strange name, “Shuq,” who makes him sit with his eyes closed and has taught him nothing. Today, at last, Shuq announces that he has seen the hidden desire for magic in him and will teach him, but only for a fee. The narrator’s patience snaps and he slaps the man. Within moments, Shuq’s guards beat him up and Shuq shouts threats: since he dared raise a hand against Shuq, his life will become hell and death will knock at his door every moment. The thugs throw him out onto a road. Bruised, he drags himself to a park bench to think about these threats, and just then an advertisement falls into his lap.

With tongue-in-cheek humour, the writer pokes fun at the greed for quick riches and at the fake peers and amils who feed on it.
