The novel opens with an alarm clock. Hadeed switches it off with a frown and gets up, because he is always on time for his meetings. A soft fragrance hangs in the room, and as on many other days there is a note on his pillow: “Good morning, have a nice day. Tumhari zindagi in phoolon ki tarah mehakti rahe.” The writer, Romeesa, says she came in the morning but he was fast asleep and looked very cute, and she wishes him luck for his meeting. Hadeed reads it every day, and every day it makes him smile.

Dressed in a grey suit, he walks past the breakfast table. His mother, Sadia Begum, calls after him to eat something, but he politely says he isn’t hungry and leaves, and she watches him go with a sad heart. In the porch, Asmara is waiting with a long face. He asks what is wrong only half-heartedly, tells her his driver will drop her and drives off. “Kaash aap khud drop karne ka keh dete,” she thinks as tears fill her eyes. “Lekin aap ko to kuch lagta hi nahin.” The driver politely calls, “Chalein madam.”

In another home the mood is completely different. Pari is happily watching TV when Faizi walks in, grabs the remote and switches to a cricket match. A full-on fight begins: Pari demands the remote, Faizi refuses, and when she calls him “Faizi bhai,” he is shocked and reminds her that he is her fiancé. Farzana Begum walks in asking why the two of them are fighting like children. Zoya Chaudhry mixes heartache and hansi-mazaq to set up several love stories at once.
