About this novel

Dukhon Bhare Chaman Mein Bahaar (Urdu: دکھوں بھرے چمن میں بہار) by Maham Ehsaan is a complete Urdu cousin romance about Hassan and his cousin Aleeza. It opens with Hassan driving off and leaving Aleeza behind yet again, and the whole family wonders if these two will ever stop fighting.

The story opens with Aleeza running after Hassan: “Hassan, where are you running off to? Stop!” He turns around and tells her she has a real problem – she loves gossiping about pointless things. “Arre yaar, listen to me – aren’t you going to take me with you?” she calls out, but Hassan ignores her, speeds off in his car and drives away. Aleeza stands there with her hands on her waist, watching. “Arre hamare sanam ji,” she says to herself, “however much you try to escape us, I’ll turn every separate path into one, and then we’ll see how you keep strutting in front of me.”

Back home, Hassan sees his Khala – Aleeza’s mother – walking in and almost avoids her eyes. “Noreen, do you see? Hassan has left Aleeza behind again today,” she complains. “Nahin, nahin, Khala,” Hassan protests – he honestly doesn’t want to leave her, but she annoys him so much. Noreen cuts in: “Oh, Aapa, this is their daily story – I’ll send the driver, and she’ll come back with him.” Hassan adds mischievously that there’s no need to worry; if nobody goes to fetch her, she’ll turn up on her own.

کزنز کی لڑائی، خالاؤں کی شکایتیں، اور اندر چھپا ہوا پیار۔

When someone remarks that Aleeza has been spoilt, her mother asks why she shouldn’t pamper her – she’s her only daughter, born after many prayers and mannats. Hassan sits at his Khala’s feet and sweet-talks her: “My dear Khala Jaan, why do you bring Mama into every matter? Who do I have besides you? As for Aleeza – that’s a cousin thing. We fight, but we love each other too.” His aunt laughs that he has a real way with words.

Maham Ehsaan sets a playful, affectionate tone with lots of ghar ki nok-jhok, and the title – “spring in a garden full of sorrows” – hints that some heartache will come before the happy ending.
