About this novel

Ashiq Hoya Tere Te (Urdu: عاشق ہویا تیرے تے) by Sajeela Nisar is a light Urdu cousin romance about Marwish, a cheerful university student. Her cousin Dr Shahvez drives her to university every day and clearly enjoys teasing her, and the fun begins from there.

The novel opens with a familiar morning rush. “Marwish beta, hurry up, you’re getting late for university – and you still have to eat!” her mother calls from the breakfast table while Marwish is busy in her room. “Ammi jaan, just one minute, I’m putting books in my bag,” she shouts back, then rushes out with her phone and bag. “Assalam-o-alaikum! Good morning, Baba!” she says, hugging her father, Ahsan Sahib, from behind.

Her father asks if she is coming with him to the university today. “No, Baba, Shahvez ka bacha will come to pick me up,” she says carelessly, earning a look from her mother, Maria, who has told her countless times to speak like a civilised person. Marwish just grins: “Okay Baba, Dr Shahvez Sahib will pick me up today for university. Theek hai, Ammi jaan?” Her parents can only laugh at their darling daughter.

Right on cue, Shahvez walks in and greets everyone. When he catches Marwish’s eye, he winks at her and laughs, and pulls up a chair. “Beta, will you have breakfast?” Maria asks, and he jokes that his Khala’s house always smells so good he can’t refuse, even though he’s had breakfast already. Marwish taunts him – “Tauba, Shahvez, kabhi to ghar se kha liya kar” – but one sharp look from her mother makes her bite her tongue. Soon the two head off, and in the car Shahvez warns her not to behave like that in front of everyone, or he won’t be responsible if he loses his temper. “What behaviour?” she asks with fake innocence, and the playful battle continues.

Sajeela Nisar keeps the tone fun and breezy, full of cousin nok-jhok, and the title promises that the teasing hides real feelings.
