About this novel
Ek Ajnabi Mere Dil Ka Sukoon (Urdu: ایک اجنبی میرے دل کا سکون) by Maham Ahsan is a complete Urdu romance about a lonely girl starting university. Anabia is privileged but alone, and the strangers she meets at university are about to change her quiet life.
The novel opens on Anabia’s face: she looks cheerful on the surface, but as always, her heart isn’t at peace. She is very lonely, though today she is a little happier than usual. “Anabia Bibi, come quickly, the driver is waiting,” the maid calls. In light lipstick and soft kohl that make her simple beauty glow, she comes down the stairs neatly wrapped in a dupatta. She always misses being called by her name at home, but despite having parents, she never shares her feelings with anyone.
Today is her first day at university. Privately she resents her father for sending her there – he thinks giving her admission fulfils his responsibilities, but he couldn’t be more wrong. The car stops in front of her department; there’s still time before class, and her new classmates are introducing themselves to one another. Anabia isn’t one to start conversations, so she sits to one side – until she feels a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, hello, I’m Sara, from the department of psychology.” Anabia gives her name, and the friendship begins.
گھر میں سب کچھ ہے، مگر دل کا سکون کہیں نہیں۔
Anabia has never liked long conversations, and at home she has nobody to talk to except the maid Rani. So Sara’s easy, chatty company feels new. Soon Sara’s friends arrive – Saim, Rabia, Awais and Waqas – teasing each other in English and laughing about how they all got admission in the same university. Sara introduces Anabia as her new friend, and the whole group welcomes her, though Anabia only replies when spoken to. Her quiet beauty doesn’t go unnoticed. Later, while she waits for her driver, a man sitting in a car opposite watches her for a long time, though she is completely unaware.
Maham Ahsan writes about loneliness, friendship and a girl searching for sukoon, and the title promises that peace will come from a stranger. A light, modern campus romance.
