The story begins in an ordinary, noisy home. Hira has just sat down with her books, because tomorrow is her last paper, but the TV in the lounge is blaring. She marches out, scolds her younger brother Fawad and switches it off. Their mother, Zakia Begum, hears the shouting and comes in. Hira complains that her mama’s “laadla beta” is not letting her study, and Zakia Begum sends Fawad off to his books. Fawad grumbles, “Mama, aap hamesha Api ki side leti hain,” and walks away, while Hira hugs her mother and tells her she is the best mama in the world.

In another house, Yawar has just returned from the office when Ramzan Chacha tells him that Mahmood Sahab wants to see him. In the bedroom, his parents, Mahmood Sahab and Rukhsana Begum, sit him down for something important: it is time he got married, and if he likes a girl he should tell them. Yawar refuses straight away. His business is settled, his father points out, so why say no? Yawar only says that he will marry when he finds a girl he likes, and suggests they get Azar married first, since he has finished his studies. Rukhsana Begum warns him that if he does not choose soon, he will have to marry the girl she picks.

After Yawar leaves, Rukhsana tells her husband she feels he is hiding something, because he has looked unusually happy for a few days, and Mahmood Sahab agrees. The episode then moves to a restaurant, where Yawar keeps checking his watch until his friend Asim finally arrives. Maryam Choudhury sets up two families, a secret and a rishta question in just a few pages.
