About this novel
Dil Yaar Tak Na Pohnchay Episodes 1 to 18 (Urdu: دل یار تک نہ پہنچے) by Maryam Choudhury is the opening run of a long Urdu family romance. It follows Hira’s close, cheerful family and Yawar, a successful young businessman who keeps refusing to marry.
The first scene is pure family life. Hira has just sat down with her books when the TV blares from outside. She shuts her books, marches out and scolds her younger brother. Their mother, Zakia Begum, comes into the TV lounge to find out what the noise is about. Fawad complains that Aapi won’t let him watch the match, while Hira points out that her exams are going on and tomorrow is her last paper – how can she study with her mother’s “pampered son” making so much noise? Zakia Begum tells Fawad to go and study and leave the TV off so his sister can prepare. “Mama, you always take Aapi’s side,” he grumbles, stomping off to his room. Hira hugs her mother – “you’re the best mama in the world, love you so much” – and promises to make up with her brother.
The story then moves to Yawar, who has just come home from the office when Ramzan, the household help, tells him that Mahmood Sahib is calling him. Yawar quickly changes and goes to his father’s room, where his mother Rukhsana is resting against the headboard and Mahmood Sahib is busy on his laptop. “Sit down, beta, we need to talk to you about something important.”
ایک طرف امتحانوں کا شور، دوسری طرف شادی سے انکار کرتا یاور۔
His mother gets to the point: they are thinking it’s time he got married – if he likes any girl, he should tell them. Yawar reminds them he has already said he doesn’t want to marry yet; please don’t think about it right now. His father asks why he keeps refusing when his business is now stable. Yawar insists: whenever he likes a girl, he’ll marry – meanwhile, they should get Azar married, since he has finished his studies. Rukhsana agrees to think about it, but warns him that if he doesn’t choose someone soon, they’ll choose for him.
Maryam Choudhury balances warmth and drama, and these early episodes lay the ground for how Hira’s and Yawar’s paths will eventually cross.
