About this novel
Uraan by Faizan Ahmed is a gripping Urdu suspense novel that opens with a young woman tied up in a strange room. She has no idea how she got there or who brought her, and the novel slowly reveals the answer.
Beads of sweat roll down her forehead and onto her eyelashes until her eyes flutter open. She tries to wipe her face, but her hand will not move, and with a jolt she realises that her hands are tied behind her back. “Mere haath bandhe hue hain?” Turning her head sends a sharp pain through her neck and shoulders, and the pain wakes her up completely. The room is dark and stifling. “Yeh kya? Kahan hoon main?”
Faizan Ahmed slows the moment down beautifully. She looks left and right, squeezes her eyes shut and opens them again, trying to make sense of it all. Slowly the room comes into focus: it is half dark, with curtains over the windows and only a little afternoon light creeping in. There is a beautiful bed, an LCD TV on the wall, a dustbin by the door and a wardrobe in the corner. On any other day, she thinks, this would be the perfect place for an afternoon nap, far from the noise of her brothers and sisters at home. But today the silence is terrifying.
One thought makes her tremble: “Mujhe kidnap kar liya gaya hai?” She is sitting on the floor against the wall, and her dupatta, which she never takes off, is missing. When she tries to get up, she falls face-first onto the dusty marble floor. With great effort she pulls herself up using the bed and wonders why she was left on the floor when there is a bed right there. Then she starts struggling to free her hands. Who brought her here, and why, is the mystery that drives Uraan forward.
