About this novelette

Tanha Kisi Jazeeray Par (Urdu: تنہا کسی جزیرے پر) by Mehak Roshan is a short Urdu romance about Aiman, the pampered only daughter of her parents. Her biggest worry is her beloved cat, until a collision on her college walkway changes the mood.

The story opens in a rush. “Beta, get ready quickly, you’ll be late!” Atiya calls. “Just a little longer, Mama – I’m ready, Dilafroz just needs to get ready.” Her mother can’t believe it: what preparations could this Dilafroz possibly need that never end? Then a little drama: “Oh, why is Mama so angry today?” Aiman asks her cat. Atiya complains that her daughter has gone too far – other people’s daughters speak so sweetly, and hers never misses a chance to tease her. When Aiman finally appears holding her cat, her mother calls it “billi”, and Aiman protests: “Mama, again you called my Dilafroz a cat!” Atiya laughs and tells her to get in the car quickly.

The writer jokes about how Dilafroz rules the house. Instead of going out, the cat runs back into the room, and the poor maid has to look after her until evening. Atiya teases that their daughter has chosen to turn a cat into her own child – her darling Dilafroz. Aiman corrects her mother’s pronunciation; the name is Dilafroz, not “Dulfaroz”. Aiman is the only child of Rashid Khan and Atiya, the light of their eyes, and both love her without limit.

ایک لاڈلی بیٹی، اس کی بلی دل افروز، اور کالج کے راستے میں ایک ٹکر۔

Then the scene shifts to her college. Fifteen minutes after entering through the main gate, Aiman is walking along the back walkway toward her department when she collides hard with someone. “Can’t you watch where you’re going? Are these eyes borrowed from someone?” she snaps, as if eyes like buttons were only meant for blinking. The person in front of her wants to say something but stays silent – the girl’s personality leaves him no room to speak, and he has no standing to argue, so he decides it’s best to keep quiet.

Mehak Roshan keeps the tone light and playful, and the title – “alone on some island” – hints that this spoilt heroine’s world is about to get much bigger.
