The novel opens with a very funny morning. The mali is cutting roses in the garden and singing at the top of his voice, “kaise bani, kaise bani,” and upstairs Haider Sahab is dragged out of his sleep with red, angry eyes. He storms down and shouts in the old man’s ear, “Bas bhi karo, ab chutney ban gayi mere dimagh ki!” The poor mali gets such a fright that he lands on the ground, apologising again and again. From the sofa, Khaliq Ali lowers his newspaper and gently tells his son that the mali is human too and has every right to sing.

Then Aliya Khan introduces the family. Khaliq Ali is a respected professor, and his house is full of very different young people. Ali Abbas, the eldest, is a college teacher. Haider Ali lives in his own world and his motto is simply “baap ka cash, full aish.” Their sister Faryal is the brainy one who is always studying, and their cousin Komal, the daughter of Khaliq Ali’s brother, has grown up with them since her parents died in a car accident when she was small.

On another set we meet two best friends, Ada and Parishay. Ada Khan is a famous model and actress, and Parishay, who now dreams of acting too, goes to the shoot with her every day. When Ada catches her glued to Facebook yet again, she snatches the phone and throws it at the wall: “Madam, kabhi phone se nikal kar duniya bhi dekh lo.” Their dosti, the glamour of the showbiz world and a hero in a white shirt and black coat all hint that a stubborn, ziddi kind of love is about to begin.

ضد بھی عشق کی ایک ادا ہے، جو جھکتا نہیں وہی سب سے زیادہ چاہتا ہے۔
