Tera Ishq Hi Mera Junoon Hai by Aliya Khan is a romantic Urdu novel about a girl who prays with tears in her eyes. A rich, handsome young man has never believed that any girl could love him for himself, until their paths cross.
The novel opens quietly. Maryam is sitting on her prayer mat, tears streaming down her face as she asks her Rab for a good fate. Her friend Aisha walks in, ready to leave and saying they are getting late. Maryam gets up from namaz, fixes her hijab and asks Aisha if she has prayed. Aisha says she will pray when she gets back, and Maryam gently reminds her that no one knows what will happen in the next five minutes. Their neighbour passed away only yesterday, she points out, after saying she would go to Islamabad in two or three days, and now she has gone straight to her Rab. So Aisha should never put things off, especially namaz when the azaan is called. “Achha baba,” Aisha smiles, and goes to pray.
Then the story moves to a very different world. “Ayan yaar, bas bhi kar de,” Hamza says, taking a cigarette from his friend’s hand. Aliya Khan describes Ayan in a blue shirt and white pants, hair falling on his forehead and a light beard, looking like a film hero. He is the son of Usman Abdullah, a famous and successful businessman. Every girl at their university is crazy about him, and all the girls have their eyes on him.
Hamza teases him about all the beautiful girls he never even looks at. Ayan laughs and says his eyes are waiting for a girl who will become his ishq, and whom he will love to the point of madness. He tells Hamza that no girl in his life has been sincere: if he didn’t have all this wealth and status, none of them would give their life for him. Girls only want money and a big house, he says. Aliya Khan sets up a love story where faith and true feelings may finally change a cynical heart.
