Tere Milne Ke Baad by Aliya Khan

About this novel

Tere Milne Ke Baad by Aliya Khan is a lively Urdu family romance about two cousins and their life in a hostel. One is an orphan raised by her loving uncle, and an aunt who never quite accepted her.

The novel opens with friendly chaos. “Uff yaar, tum bhi na had karti ho,” Dua groans: tomorrow is their last exam, and instead of studying, Jaisha is stuffing herself with food. Jaisha shoots back that she can’t even eat in peace, and she has told Dua a hundred times that food comes first, because it is what makes the brain work. Dua threatens that if she fails because of Jaisha, she will pull her hair out, but Jaisha pulls her down beside her in a flash, and Dua gives in.

At home, Rukhsana Begum and her husband, Gulzar Sahab, are discussing their “two darling girls” coming back from the hostel. Rukhsana suggests, a little sharply, that Jaisha is old enough now and should be married off soon. Gulzar Sahab firmly refuses. Jaisha is his only brother’s only daughter, he says, and she is his responsibility. They will think about marriage only when she wants to. Rukhsana gets up in a huff, complaining that he loves Jaisha more than anyone.

Aliya Khan then explains the background. Gulzar Sahab and his younger brother were very close and had only each other. Allah blessed each of them with one daughter. Some time ago, Jaisha’s parents, Hassan and Ayesha, were killed in a car accident when Jaisha was very small, and Gulzar Ahmed raised her like his own daughter. Two years later his own daughter, Dua, was born. Rukhsana Begum, however, always kept her distance from Jaisha. Gulzar Ahmed’s family is well known and wealthy, one of the most respected families in Islamabad. Aliya Khan sets up a warm, emotional story about family and love.
