About this novel
Tum Bin Jeena Mumkin Nahi by Hamna Tanveer is an Urdu family romance built around a wedding and a grumpy cousin abroad. Its two big themes are faith in Allah and the cost of disobeying parents.
Hamna Tanveer says plainly at the start that this story has two themes: yaqeen in Allah, and children disobeying their parents. Then the story opens in a cheerful, busy home. Noor is sitting on her bed admiring her baraat lehenga when Afaq bursts through the door, and she scolds him for not knocking. “Sorry Api,” he says, scratching his head. Afaq feels sad that Noor will soon be married and leaving, and she promises she will miss him too and tells him to keep visiting her. Then he teases, “Api, yeh lehenga main pehen kar dekhun?”, and Noor bursts out laughing, which is exactly what he wanted. When she asks if Khala has arrived, he says she is sitting downstairs, and they go down together.
Downstairs, Noor hugs her aunt and sits with her. Khala asks if all the wedding preparations are done, and Noor says they are, except for one thing: Khala’s mehndi outfit, which Noor wanted to shop for with her. Khala happily agrees to finish the rest of the shopping together, and Noor goes off to make tea while her mother and aunt chat.
Then Afaq brings up “hamare khadoos,” the cousin who lives in Dubai. “Kya hua unko?” Noor asks, wrinkling her nose. Afaq says the cousin won’t be coming to the wedding, and Noor is shocked. He says he will only come if Noor personally brings him the invitation card, so how is she supposed to go all the way to Dubai? Afaq laughs that he was only joking, and Noor throws a spoon at him. Hamna Tanveer fills these first pages with warm family teasing before the deeper story begins.
اللہ پر یقین اور والدین کی دعا، یہی زندگی کا اصل سہارا ہے۔
