Nafrat Se Shuru Hone Wali Mohabbat Ki Dastaan by Hamna Tanveer is a fun, high-energy Urdu university romance. Its two leads cannot stand each other, and their love, as the title promises, begins with hate.

The writer starts by listing a few characters’ nicknames: Muskan (Mishi), Moeed (Adi) and Sana (Neeni). Then we are straight into the action. “Neeni, main bata rahi hoon, agar aaj bhi us ne mujh se larai ki to mujh se bura koi nahin hoga,” Mishi warns. Neeni, holding back a smile, tells her she is already worse than anyone, and suggests she just ignore him. Mishi refuses to give him that much importance, but she also can’t stay quiet when he picks a fight. Neeni sighs, knowing another war is about to begin.

Then Iram, Moeed and Saad arrive together. Hamna Tanveer describes Moeed: black shirt sleeves rolled to the elbow over jeans, a light beard on his fair face, neat hair, a wristwatch and sunglasses hooked on his shirt, a striking personality. Mishi is just as stylish in a long black kameez with black jeans, a dupatta around her neck and long brown hair falling over her shoulders.

Iram notices at once: “Arey wah Neeni, dekho in dono ne aaj ek hi colour ke kapre pehne hain.” Before Adi can say a word, Mishi snaps that she has been here for ages, so obviously he is copying her. Adi fires back that it looks like she is the one following him, and that she must be seriously mistaken. Everyone tries not to laugh, and Mishi warns him that one day he won’t even know where he has gone wrong and will end up crying all over the university. Finally Saad steps in and stops them: the whole class is watching, he says, and they are fighting like children. Mishi stomps off to class while the rest head to the café.
