The Vampire Aaron by Tahbeer Khan is the first part of a dark, romantic Urdu fantasy about a young man who is not human. He slowly discovers his true nature, and the series continues with Aaron Part 2 and Adyan Part 3.
The novel opens late at night. Aaron races home and stops in front of his house, feeling a strange restlessness inside him. He cannot remember when he left the house or what he was doing in the jungle. Why is he feeling like this? He unlocks the door, goes straight to the washroom and sees his face in the mirror: it is completely red. There is blood on his lips. Is this really blood, and how did it get there? He looks into his own beautiful blue eyes, and they look frightening.
He showers and comes out to find his mom standing there, calm now, asking why he isn’t asleep and where he was, because she came to his room and he wasn’t there. Aaron doesn’t want to worry her. He says he only went out for some fresh air. He remembers nothing, he thinks to himself, as she says goodnight and leaves.
Then an old memory comes back. When Aaron was ten, he asked his mom why they live in such a lonely place, so far from the city and so close to the jungle. She told him it was because the sea was nearby and she loved seeing it from the window. Later she shares a secret: she doesn’t want to lose her “shahzada,” the way she already lost his dad. They have many enemies in the city, she says, so she brought him here to live in peace. From then on, Aaron never asked who their enemies were. Even now, he doesn’t want to worry her, though he cannot understand why she is always so afraid.
The story then switches to a girl’s messy room, where Zulfa lies asleep, and the writer sets up the meeting that will change both their lives. Tahbeer Khan blends mystery, horror and romance from the very start.
