Tery Ishq Main Hari (Urdu: تیرے عشق میں ہاری) by Sajeela Nisar is a short, complete Urdu romance about Hijab and one life-changing phone call. Her evenings have turned sad and lonely, until a single call seems to answer all her prayers.

The novel opens on yet another gloomy evening. Lately every evening has been like this for Hijab, full of silence and sadness. After praying Asr she is still on her prayer mat, bowed before her Rabb, tears falling before she has even started her dua. The writer reminds us that the Most Merciful loves a servant’s tears and the prayers made with them, and sometimes turns them into acceptance.

Later, sitting on her bed with her chin on her knees, Hijab is lost in thought when her phone rings. It’s her friend Dua. “Hello Hijab, where are you?” “In jahannum,” Hijab snaps, and Dua laughs – where else would she be except at home? Hijab, in a foul mood, says she’s feeling as if a truck ran over her and she’s in hospital with her legs in plaster. Dua can’t stop laughing at how grumpy she sounds.

Then Dua gets to the point: she called to say Hijab should come for an interview tomorrow – and she can bring her sister along too. Hijab can hardly believe it. “Kya matlab?” Dua tells her to just come, she’ll text the address, and hangs up. Hijab stares at the phone for a moment and then jumps up with joy, thanking Allah for listening to the prayers of His sinful servants, before running out to give her Ammi the good news.

Hijab’s family isn’t big but isn’t small either: five siblings, with Noor the eldest, then Hijab, then twin sisters Amna and Sawera, and finally the youngest, a brother named Ahmad. The whole house is about to hear her good news.

Sajeela Nisar mixes faith, friendship and family responsibility, and the title – “lost in your love” – promises that romance is waiting at the end of that interview. A light, quick read with a lot of heart.
