Tere Ishq Mein Pagal (Urdu: تیرے عشق میں پاگل) by Sajeela Nisar is an Urdu romance between a careless rich boy and a quiet college girl. Zawar spends his nights in clubs, while Zunaira’s mornings begin with her bhabhi’s taunts.

The novel opens in a club. Zawar sits half-drunk, watching the dancing girls with bored, reddened eyes. When a girl called Nina catches his hand and asks where her “Zoyi jaan” is going, he shakes her off, tells her where she can go, and walks out of the club, leaving her furious behind him.

Elsewhere, a girl is in deep sleep when her phone rings. It’s her friend Saniya: what’s she doing asleep, today is Ma’am Tamreen’s test, and she has to be at college in five minutes. Zunaira jumps up, grabs her uniform and runs to get ready. In a white uniform, with a neatly tied hijab framing her fair face and blue eyes, she picks up her bag and comes downstairs, and her bhabhi, who is sitting there, starts in on her straight away about the maharani expecting breakfast to be served. Zunaira leaves the house without eating, wiping her tears. The writer notes that this is her everyday routine.

Zawar, meanwhile, wakes up at nine and thinks over the night before. He washes, comes out to find his phone ringing, and smiles when he sees his friend Ahmad Yar’s name.

Sajeela Nisar (who also writes as Miral) keeps the chapters short and lets the contrast between these two lives do the work. The title tells you that one of them is going to be driven mad by love. It’s 210 pages.
