About this novel

Mahi Naal Naal (Urdu: ماہی نال نال) by H Hoor is a long, complete Urdu romance that starts in a busy private company office. Hard-working Seemab’s computer crashes in front of her proud, strict colleague Asfand, before the story moves to a spoilt, stubborn girl named Pareesha.

The novel opens with a small office emergency. “Asfand, look, something’s happened to the computer, please!” Seemab says anxiously, staring at the black screen. In the cabin opposite, Asfand turns his chair around with an air of importance. He’s dressed in the company’s uniform – white shirt, grey tie and dark pants – with deep grey, sea-coloured eyes, proud dark brows, a sharp nose, sculpted lips and a tall, strong build, his neatly cut hair and light stubble making him handsome by any measure.

“Let me see – you come here,” he says, closing his files. Seemab tells him to hurry, because the boss is already in a bad mood today and won’t show any mercy. Seemab is a dusky girl with neatly wrapped dupatta, small eyes, a small nose and soft, innocent cheeks. She comes from a middle-class family, and after her father’s death she has been the support of her younger brother and elderly mother, working hard all day for a salary of twenty-five thousand, never caring to dress up. Asfand tells her coolly that if the computer was going to break, she should have saved her files; now she’ll have to work twice as hard, because he’ll e-mail her the full details and she’ll have to redo it herself.

دفتر کا خراب کمپیوٹر، مغرور اسفند، اور محنتی سیماب۔

Their colleague Aalim, a cheerful, ordinary-looking young man from a middle-class family, pops his head out of his cabin with a mischievous grin to tease them. Aalim, we learn, is a little younger than Asfand. Then the scene shifts to another home, where Atiya Begum calls out to her daughter Pareesha, wrapped in a blanket and refusing to get up for college. Pareesha – stubborn and innocent like children, with big hazel-green eyes and a delicate, slim build – is very hot-tempered and stubborn, and everyone in the house is fed up with her moods.

H Hoor sets up two very different heroines and a proud hero, and the Punjabi title – “always with my beloved” – promises romance with plenty of drama.
