Sar e Raah Chalte Chalte by H Hoor

About this novel

Sar e Raah Chalte Chalte (Urdu: سرِ راہ چلتے چلتے, “along the way”) by H Hoor is a short Urdu romance that moves between a haveli and a pampered only daughter. The haveli is getting ready for its son’s return, and her happy life is about to be touched by someone’s buri nazar.

It opens on a girl crying to Allah, asking how much longer this trial will last and what she can do on her own, with no mother or father to turn to. Then it cuts to a phone call. Meeraj, studying far from home, has heard that his father has had an accident. His father insists he’s fine and tells him not to come back yet: things at home aren’t good, and he wants his son to finish his studies first. Meeraj promises to come soon, and only after hearing his father’s voice can he breathe again.

حویلی کی رونق، ایک لاڈلی بیٹی، اور راستے میں ملنے والی قسمت۔

In another house lives Shifa, the only daughter of Asif, born after fifteen long years of prayers. At sixteen she’s heiress to a fortune worth crores, beautiful and well brought up, yet she still runs off to play with the children in the park until her father calls her home with the promise of ice cream. H. Hoor adds a warning: someone sitting nearby has cast a dark look at all that happiness, and fate had other plans.

Back at the haveli, the floors are being scrubbed and the curtains changed under the eye of Meeraj’s grandmother, who gives orders in the local language. The whole place is being dressed up like a bride for Meeraj’s homecoming. Somewhere else, a weak voice asks for something to eat, and the answer is that there’s nothing until tomorrow.

At 159 pages it’s a quick read, and the title fits a story where lives cross by chance.
