Sitamgar Hi Humsafar Tha (Urdu: ستمگر ہی ہمسفر تھا) by Iqra Sheikh is a romantic Urdu novel that opens with a girl running alone through the night. She is trying to save her izzat from the men chasing her, and the man who finds her will change her life.

She has been running for so long that her feet are bleeding. There is no house and no road in sight, only an empty, silent stretch of land, and every time she stops to catch her breath she hears footsteps coming closer. She keeps praying as she runs. When a road finally appears she thanks Allah, sure that help will come, and without daring to look back she runs straight into an oncoming car. Her head hits the ground, and the last thing she feels before her eyes close is two hands lifting her up.

The next scene moves to a very different world. Azaan Shah is working late on a file for an important meeting. He has plenty of staff to do it, but he doesn’t like mistakes in his work. He has built his business so quickly that his name now counts among the city’s best-known businessmen, and his workers joke that their boss never learned how to smile. The one person who can make him smile is his younger brother Azlan, who calls and talks non-stop, asking why he hasn’t come home and telling him that Bi Jaan keeps asking for him. Azaan lives alone in a big house in the same city, keeping his family at a distance so that none of his troubles ever reach them. Azlan knows why his brother works day and night, and he wishes he could share that dard.

In the family home, Rida finds Bi Jaan sitting quietly on the lawn and worries that she is unwell. Bi Jaan just smiles at how much the girl cares for her, and Rida tells her she is all she has.

The title, “the tormentor was my life partner”, hints that the man in this love story will hurt before he heals. Iqra Sheikh sets up the mystery of the injured girl and the serious, hard-working Azaan Shah from the very first pages.
