Mera Yaar Bedardi Novel by Iqra Sheikh

About this novel

Mera Yaar Bedardi (Urdu: میرا یار بے دردی, “my heartless beloved”) by Iqra Sheikh is a romantic Urdu novel about proud Zarkhan and Hoor, the girl in his own house. Zarkhan has never learned how to lose, and he can’t stand the sight of Hoor, until love starts to change the rules.

It opens with two cars tearing down a road in a street race, driven so fast that anyone watching would pray for the drivers. A black BMW crosses the line first, and Zarkhan steps out smiling like someone who knew all along that nobody could beat him. The crowd chants his name. He walks over to his furious rival Faisal, another rich man’s spoiled son, straightens his jacket collar and tells him to stop trying. Faisal drives off swearing that one day he’ll break Zarkhan’s ghuroor. Anaya, who has decided that Zarkhan belongs to her alone, is at his side the whole time. He barely notices her.

Iqra Sheikh lets you see that the racing is how Zarkhan burns off his anger and his sadness. He comes home late to a dark, silent house, and on the way to his room someone runs straight into him. He clamps a hand over her mouth before she can scream and drags her into the kitchen. When the light comes on, it’s Hoor.

وہ جیتنا جانتا ہے، مگر حور سے اتنی نفرت کیوں؟

The way he speaks to her says everything: get out of my sight, just seeing your face ruins my mood. Hoor runs. The next morning, after fajr, she raises her hands to pray and can’t stop crying. Every time she has looked into Zarkhan’s eyes she has found only nafrat, and she still hasn’t got used to it. “Ya Allah, Zarkhan mujh se itni nafrat kyun karte hain?”

That question runs through the 401 pages of the novel, which suits readers who like a proud, bedard hero and a heroine who keeps loving him anyway.
