One day i will completely forget you By Samaa Chaudhary

About this novelette

One Day I Will Completely Forget You by Samaa Chaudhary is a short Urdu romance about Adan, an artist searching for someone. Qaswa loves him but feels she can never be the girl he keeps painting.

The story opens with Adan reciting romantic verses in praise of beauty. He speaks the lines fluently while looking admiringly at Qaswa Muhammad, as if there were some magic in her presence. For a few minutes she stands there unable to understand him, glowing like a sunbeam, while he gazes at her with eyes full of feeling.

Then Qaswa tries to change the subject to escape his gaze. “Adan, can I ask you something?” “Yes, go ahead.” “You’re an artist, you can create anything – yet every time you paint the same thing: a woman’s silhouette, her height and form, and her outline fades away. Why? Why don’t you ever create something from nature’s beautiful scenes?” Adan, holding a brush stained red and black, takes a deep breath as if reassuring himself he’s still alive. He’s not bound to answer any of her questions, he says a little bitterly, and goes back to filling the corners of the unfinished painting with black.

Qaswa’s inner voice tells us the rest. “Hmm… you know, I’ve started to love you,” she wants to say – but every time, she finds him searching for someone else. “Adan, you look for someone else in me, so restlessly. Do you know how painful that is? I want you, and you want someone else in me. It’s as if I don’t even exist.” She feels herself fading, while his search never ends. She longs for just one moment when his eyes will stop on her and truly see her.

Samaa Chaudhary writes with poetry and heartache, and the English title hints at a painful decision ahead.
