Jo Milay Thay Rastay Main By Samaa Chaudhary

About this novelette

Jo Milay Thay Rastay Mein (Urdu: جو ملے تھے راستے میں) by Samaa Chaudhary is a short Urdu love story told through the grief of a heartbroken man. Gohar Ali, broken after losing the woman he loved, tells his friend Asad how he first met her on a roadside.

Samaa Chaudhary begins with a personal note: this story is very close to her heart, and she has gathered her courage to put it into words, arranging it so readers’ hearts and minds can follow it too. She looks forward to their opinions.

Then the story opens in pain. “Nayab Gohar Ali… how complete this name is, isn’t it?” a devastated Gohar says, staring at a wall. Asad watches his friend’s tears flowing endlessly, the name repeated like a lament. Gohar would have paid any price for her, but she knew he would give everything – so why did she leave? “Asad, why did she go?” Asad holds his hands to comfort him. Gohar laughs bitterly, and his laughter echoes through the room like a stone thrown into still water – a sound that only makes the silence heavier.

“Gohar, where did you find Nayab?” Asad asks gently, trying to understand. At the mention of her name, Gohar walks to the window, half-open, with moonlight still falling through it. “There…” he points, toward the road, rubbing his eyes as if to clear the view. “I found her standing at that corner of the road, wrapped in a torn chador.” She was barefoot, her hair loose and scattered, wearing pale clothes, and kept wiping her lips, which were bleeding. On the cold ground, she kept shifting from one foot to the other, rubbing them with her hands. There was silence all around, yet in Gohar’s ears it was as if anklets were ringing; his heart danced, and he couldn’t help himself. Asad listens, stunned, wondering how much his dearest friend has suffered in so little time.

Samaa Chaudhary writes with poetry and heartbreak, and the title – “those we met along the way” – captures a love that began by chance and changed a life.
