Inteqaam Ki Aag (Urdu: انتقام کی آگ) by Muniba Asif is a complete Urdu novel of friendship and revenge about two best friends, Ahmar and Sarim. Their bond is about to be tested by a mysterious woman who wants to tear them apart, and the title means the fire of revenge.

The novel opens by describing a friendship people could set as an example. From school to college, Ahmar and Sarim studied together; then Ahmar went to America for higher studies while Sarim continued his education in Pakistan. Sarim comes from a middle-class family, while Ahmar’s family is quite wealthy. Now Ahmar is back, and Sarim is at the airport to receive him. They hug, tease each other – had Ahmar enjoyed America so much he forgot his friend? – and Sarim drives him home, joking about his friend’s expensive car.

Then comes a darker scene. Someone shows a “Madam” a photo and a file full of information about Ahmar. Who’s the boy with him? Sarim, his friend – and rumour has it the two would give their lives for each other. Madam takes a pen and crosses Sarim out of the picture, cutting him away from Ahmar. “So their friendship runs deep? Then let’s test it,” she says. “Wait and watch.”

At Ahmar’s home, his surprise return delights everyone. His sister Rimsha hugs him, upset he didn’t tell them he was coming; his mother Aliya Begum is overjoyed and keeps praying that no evil eye falls on her handsome son. Later, their friend Kamran asks where Sarim disappeared to all evening and makes a jealous remark about Ahmar, and Sarim tells him he is badly misunderstanding things. Elsewhere, a young woman rushing out of the house tells her Bua she is going after an important goal and asks her to pray she succeeds, refusing to say more. At Sarim’s modest home, his mother Sofia is worried as always for her only son.

Muniba Asif sets up a story of loyalty, envy and revenge, and the title – “the fire of vengeance” – promises that Madam’s plan will put the friends’ bond to a hard test.
