About this novel

Yara Teri Yaariyan (Urdu: یارا تیری یاریاں) by Kiran Rafique is a friendship-first Urdu novel about Azm Haider, the only son of a rich industrialist. His best friend Zayam Alvi is the one person Azm’s father can’t stand, and the novel puts their friendship to the test.

It opens at breakfast on Azm’s first day at university. Haider Hassan sits down at the dining table, sees who is sitting there with his son, and his forehead creases with anger. Azm complains that his father hasn’t even wished him luck. Haider wishes him a good new life and hopes he’ll learn there what sort of people one should be friends with, looking straight at Zayam as he says it. Zayam lowers his head, gets up and walks out without a word. Azm tells his father he wishes he had a little humanity in him and follows his friend. Haider throws his glass of juice on the floor and blames his wife: if he hadn’t loved her so much, her son wouldn’t talk back to him.

Kiran Rafique then tells their story. Haider Hassan, owner of the Hassan Group of Industries, married his class fellow Faiza, and after ten years they had Azm. At five, Azm lost his grandparents in a car accident and drifted away from his father, and the gap was filled at ten by Zayam Alvi. Haider dislikes everything about Zayam, and Azm knows it, so he spends more time with Zayam than ever. In short, the other name for friendship in Azm’s life is Zayam. The chapter ends with Azm running down the road after him, calling “Zaimi, meri baat sun!“
