About this novel
Tera Ishq Meri Bandagi (Urdu: تیرا عشق میری بندگی) by Kiran Rafique is a long Urdu romance about Yashfa, a fearless student with a painful family secret. At university she teaches a cocky newcomer a lesson he will never forget.
The novel opens on the grounds of Punjab University. Yashfa sits alone, thinking about a past incident that changed her life and her sister’s. She wonders when her sister will come back to life and when she will forget what happened. As always, she quietly prays, wipes away the one tear she never wants anyone to see, and walks to class.
The moment she enters, a boy whistles at her – and the whole class falls silent, as if a snake had bitten them. Sir Farooq hasn’t arrived yet, so Yashfa walks straight up to him. “Are you new here?” He stares at her: wheatish skin, long hair in a ponytail, thick lashes, sharp features, light-brown eyes, a pink shirt over white capris and a dupatta wrapped like a muffler. She snaps her fingers to bring him back to earth. “Harib – my name is Harib. I joined yesterday,” he says, holding out his hand. Yashfa calls over a classmate, Umar, and asks, “Should I shake this hand?” Umar shakes his head – he still remembers the time he waved and winked at her from a distance and ended up spending two days in hospital.
یونیورسٹی کی سب سے نڈر لڑکی، اور اسے چھیڑنے کی غلطی کرنے والا نیا لڑکا۔
Harib makes the mistake of grabbing Yashfa’s wrist. All the girls cover their eyes, because they know what’s coming. Within five minutes, Harib has been knocked to the floor, his shirt torn, and he is begging: “I’m sorry, sister, please forgive me!” Yashfa lectures him: when you tease girls, why don’t you remember your parents and their hard work? You must have a sister at home too – how would you feel if someone did this to her? As punishment, he must stand as a murgha in front of the class every day before Sir Farooq arrives, and she warns him that Yashfa Asad Jahangir won’t spare him if he slips up.
Kiran Rafique mixes humour, a strong-willed heroine and a darker family mystery, and the title – “your love is my devotion” – promises romance with real emotional depth.
