Tery Pyar Ki Chaon Me (Urdu: تیرے پیار کی چھاؤں میں) by Shah Khawar Tanha is a long romantic novel that opens with pain and then turns to friendship. The title means “in the shade of your love”.

The first lines belong to someone who has lost the will to live. Disabled, bound to a wheelchair and surrounded by pitying looks, the speaker cries out that a life of helplessness is unacceptable: death would be better than living like this. People’s sympathy cuts like a knife. The cries grow louder and louder until the speaker collapses in despair. We don’t yet know who this is, but the scene hangs over everything that follows.

Then the story moves to a bright university morning. A red Mercedes stops at the gate, the driver opens the door, and Aimen steps out in dark glasses, her hair falling over her shoulders. She is the only daughter of a wealthy businessman. Her best friend Anabiya is waiting for her, from a respectable but poor family. They have been friends for just a year, but their friendship runs deep despite their different backgrounds. Aimen is sweet-tongued and always laughing; Anabiya is quieter and more serious. Today Anabiya seems lost in thought, and Aimen gently scolds her for carrying everyone’s problems on her shoulders. They head to the canteen together, Aimen tucking her arm through her friend’s.

Shah Khawar Tanha sets despair beside warmth and friendship, and with nearly six hundred pages the novel has room to show how these lives cross and how love can bring someone back from the edge.
