The novel opens with a splash, literally. Sheri is deep asleep when he feels someone calling him, and before he can even get up, someone pours ice-cold water over him. “Sheri, kab se keh rahi hoon, uth jao!” His eyes fly open, and there stands Mahi, ready for university. She tells him Bi Jaan has sent her, because he has to be at university by nine, and asks what he thinks he is doing. Sheri looks at the clock, sees it is only eight, and is outraged: did she really have to wake him like that? “Zara meri izzat ka bhi to socho!”
Later, Mahi walks into Bi Jaan’s room, greets her lovingly, rests her head in her lap and starts telling her all about a function at university. Then there is a knock, and Sheri walks in. He is annoyed to find Mahi already there, because this is his time with Bi Jaan, when he lays his head in her lap and tells her about his day. “Mahi, chalo ab tum jao, meri baari hai,” he says, and the two cousins start bickering over whose turn it is. Bi Jaan laughs and sends Mahi off, and on her way out Mahi teases him so much that he warns, “Tumhein baad mein dekh loonga.”
Next, Mahi needs a lift to her friend Fara’s house. Her brothers are busy, so she has no choice but to ask her “pyare cousin” Sheri. To her surprise, he agrees at once, and she soon finds out why. Five minutes from home, the bike stops: “Oh, Mahi, petrol khatam ho gaya!” They walk the rest of the way, Mahi exhausted, Sheri cheerful. At Fara’s gate, he tells her to call someone to get petrol for his broken bike, then zooms off with a grin, leaving Mahi realising she has been perfectly paid back. Zoha Asif keeps the tone light and sweet from start to finish.
