Pur Israr Zindagi (Urdu: پُراسرار زندگی) by Shafaq Ali Ashi is a short, reflective Urdu novel about Arifa, a quiet girl shaped by loss and memory. She says with her pen what she cannot say aloud, and the title means a mysterious life.

Arifa remembers waking into a beautiful house full of gardens. In spring she chased butterflies, and when she was upset with her parents or siblings she hid by the stream or in the garden. Her nights were full of stars and fireflies. Her greatest hero was her Nana ji, an army man who taught her to aim with a slingshot. Often, as she played alone, two children would come to play with her, a girl called Mehr and a boy called Asim Tabrez, and she never quite understood where they suddenly came from or where they went.

Wrapped up in herself and indifferent to most relationships, Arifa wanted to study and follow in her Nana ji’s footsteps. Then, the story tells us, came the years of 1965 and 1971. The girl who topped her class left her studies and moved to Karachi, carrying her memories of Mehr and Asim with her. In Karachi she was even more of a stranger, and she grew silent. When she went with her older sister to religious gatherings, she never answered anyone’s questions afterwards, so the family gave her a notebook and pencil and told her to write down whatever she understood. Writing became her voice. Then, one day, she wrote a poem about her childhood for the first time, about nights when darkness falls, stars scatter across the sky and everyone goes to sleep.

Shafaq Ali Ashi writes softly and poetically, with history and memory woven into a personal story. It’s a gentle read for those who enjoy introspective, literary Urdu fiction.
