Ehsas by Fawad Ali

About this afsana

Ehsaas by Fawad Ali is a short Urdu cousin romance about a proud young man who refuses to marry the cousin he grew up with. The gentle girl he rejects quietly holds the family together, and the title means feeling.

The story opens with a firm refusal. “Ammi, main kabhi bhi aisi larki se shadi nahin karunga jo apni umar ki lihaz se bari ho.” Jahangir tells his mother that Gul Rukh is older than him and very boring, and he begs her never to bring up the subject again, at least not when it comes to marriage.

Fawad Ali explains the background. Gul Rukh is Jahangir’s cousin. The two have grown up together in the same house, and after Gul Rukh’s father passed away she came to live with her uncle’s family. Jahangir’s elder sister Hina asks their mother what Jahangir said, and their mother sadly explains that he does not like Gul Rukh at all and thinks she is a dull girl. Hina comforts her mother, and Gul Rukh’s younger brother Haris gets ready for university.

The writer then paints a lively family morning. Haris works at a company and goes with his uncle to the office, while Kulsoom, Jahangir’s younger sister, goes to college with Haris. The cousins argue like children over breakfast, and their little fights only make the meal more fun. Gul Rukh wakes up early to help her aunt in the kitchen.

When Jahangir comes downstairs, he coldly tells Gul Rukh that she can go, because as long as his mother is alive he doesn’t need her help. Hurt, Gul Rukh apologises to her aunt and leaves. Jahangir’s mother scolds him for being so rude. Meanwhile, the writer tells us Jahangir has no job yet and has been applying everywhere without luck. Fawad Ali sets up a story about pride, feelings and the ehsaas that may come too late.
