About this novel

Deed E Qalb (Urdu: دیدِ قلب) by Huma Waqas is a complete Urdu romance set in Brighton, England, that opens like a scene from a film. A hurried girl on a bicycle, a handsome man getting ready and a camera lens focused on a window across the street all meet.

The novel opens in motion. Her feet press fast on the bicycle pedals, her breath racing, drops of sweat on her forehead and worry in her eyes. She keeps checking the watch on her wrist as the wheels speed along the clean road of an English town – Brighton. The scene cuts: in another room, someone runs a brush through wet hair, strokes his chin, and smiles at himself in the mirror – long lashes, beautiful eyes, a strikingly handsome face.

Back with the girl, she reaches the porch, abandons the bicycle against a wall, and rushes for the lift, not caring how it falls. On her floor she hurries down a long gallery to a flat and pushes the door open, out of breath, her fair face flushed red. Inside, Suzy glances at her with disdain, wrinkles her nose and mutters something, her golden ponytail swinging as she walks away.

برائٹن کی سڑکیں، تیز دوڑتی سائیکل، اور کیمرے کا ایک کانپتا ہوا لینس۔

The cuts continue. A man picks up his car keys and phone, checks his watch – three in the afternoon – locks the door behind him and heads for the lift. Elsewhere, someone throws a college bag onto the bed, slides open a glass door and steps onto a balcony overlooking Brighton’s big buildings and endless traffic. At a stand, a camera waits. Lips pressed together, a dimple showing, someone adjusts the lens toward a window in the building opposite, fingers trembling slightly, heart pounding. Finally, someone gets into the front seat of a car, fastens the seatbelt and looks ahead with a narrow-eyed, confident gaze.

Huma Waqas builds the opening like a film, leaving readers curious about how these lives are connected, and the title – “the vision of the heart” – suggests love seen through more than just eyes.
