The opening is pure domestic comedy. Sara is sitting at a table in the lawn with her books spread out, pretending to study while actually lost in Facebook on her tablet. The moment she hears her mother call – “Sara, beta, what are you doing?” – she hides the tablet among her books and turns around with an innocent face. The writer gently teases her: like every girl, Sara has caught the “disease” of Facebook; her weak eyes don’t bother her, and her glasses, freshly repaired after breaking for the fourth time, are only a temporary guest on her nose.

Dressed in a light pink frock and churidar, her hair in a pink pony, Sara plans her escape. Tablet tucked away like treasure, sleeves rolled up, she steps into the “battlefield” of the corridor – because her mother stands at the door like a soldier, ready to fire angry looks and sharp words. Sara needs real courage to face that.

She makes her leap across the corridor and thinks she’s safe – her mother didn’t see. But one small mistake turns the game around. As she jumps into her room, her dupatta gets caught on a flowerpot, and when she yanks it free in a panic, her mother’s beloved pot crashes down and breaks. Hearing the noise, Ammi marches toward Sara’s room, shouting. Sara knows her mother loves her endlessly – but when it comes to her plants, she is extremely sensitive. Now Sara has some explaining to do.

Mehreen Saleem keeps the tone breezy and funny, and the title – “when hearts change” – promises that this carefree heroine is about to face feelings she didn’t plan for.
