About this novel
Qurb-e-Ilahi (Urdu: قربِ الٰہی, “nearness to Allah”) is a short Urdu reflection by Bint-e-Basheer Ahmed on what a person must give up to come close to Allah. The writer, from the village of Sadkal, puts this question in a few honest and heartfelt lines.
Her answer is that everyone has to sacrifice something. For one person it is love for a na-mehram; for another it is an addiction. Whatever is dearest to us is what we must let go of, and only then do we find Allah. When she understood this, she turned the question on herself. What could she not live without? She lists her own weaknesses plainly: she loves to sleep and sleeps too much, she sometimes tells lies, she hurts people without meaning to, and she has kept in touch with a na-mehram.
She ends with a promise: with Allah’s help she will overcome these habits. If that is the price of finding her Lord, she says, it is not a small bargain but a great one, because finding Allah is greater than everything else.
