Ishq Rulata Hay (Urdu: عشق رلاتا ہے) by Noor Fatima is a romantic Urdu novel about Haya, a girl who falls under the spell of a voice on her very first day at university. Its opening poem sets the tone: if only you had been on my side, if only you had been certainty instead of doubt; I wanted to laugh with you for a moment or two, but your love made me cry.

It’s Haya’s first day, and her friend Fiza hasn’t arrived yet. Wandering the corridors, Haya hears someone singing, and the voice is so full of pain that she follows it all the way to the auditorium. What a beautiful voice, she thinks, and she is about to open the door to see who it is when Fiza finds her. The two go in together, but the hall is empty. Whoever was singing has slipped out by the other door, and Haya is disappointed that she missed him because Fiza kept her talking. Fiza shrugs it off: probably just some university student, forget him, they have to go to the principal’s office and find their class.

As they come out of the principal’s office, Fiza is looking at her phone and Haya crashes straight into someone. His phone smashes on the floor. Haya apologises even though it wasn’t really her fault, but the young man is furious: is she blind? She points out, just as sharply, that he wasn’t watching either, and she’s the one apologising, yet he can’t even speak politely.

Noor Fatima sets up a classic first meeting full of sparks, with the mystery of the singer still hanging in the air. The title, “love makes you cry”, warns that this romance will bring tears as well as smiles.
