About this novel
Dilaab (Urdu: دلاب) by Maha Saif is a romantic Urdu family novel set in a green, peaceful village before a wedding. It opens with a girl named Noor on the happiest days of her life, just before her marriage, when everything still seems perfect.
After many days, the weather has turned pleasant and the soft, warm sun feels lovely. Noor sits on a swing with her eyes closed, a shy smile on her lips, dreaming of the beautiful days ahead. Her life is full of peace, there is happiness all around, and there’s no sign of sorrow anywhere. She breathes in the fresh village air from the small rooftop, where the white pigeons perch on the low parapet. With her long dark hair, innocent eyes and soft, rosy face, the writer says, she looks almost like a fairy.
گاؤں کی تازہ ہوا، جھولا، اور آنے والے دنوں کے سنہرے خواب۔
Downstairs, the women of the house have spread out the wedding outfits. Noor’s mother holds up a beautiful deep-blue dress with heavy golden work, and Noor loves it at first sight. It’s the first wedding in the house, so everyone is excited and busy with preparations. Yet in the evening a quiet sadness settles on her face. Her mother gently explains that evenings always bring a strange melancholy, because at sunset people’s hearts turn back towards home, and that is why it’s good to keep busy with prayer.
Elsewhere in the house, a young man surprises everyone by getting up early, which is not like him at all, and greets his family with a rare smile. Maha Saif fills the opening with warmth and small details of village life, but that touch of sadness at dusk suggests the happiness won’t stay untroubled. Fans of gentle village romances will enjoy it.
