About this novel

Aadha Paagal (Urdu: آدھا پاگل) is an Urdu poetry book by Ishtiaq Ahmed, a collection of ghazals and nazms about love, longing, faith and the ache of separation. The title means “half mad”, a fitting name for poetry written by a heart that has loved too much.

The book opens with a personal touch. The poet dedicates it to his beloved parents, whose prayers, he says, brought him this far, and he also offers his verses to someone whose name he cannot say. That mix of gratitude and hidden heartbreak sets the mood for the whole collection.

غزلیں، نظمیں اور ایک ایسے شخص کے نام انتساب جس کا نام لیا نہیں جا سکتا۔

Before the poems there are three introductory pieces written by others: Harf-e-Aaghaz by Ahmed Sati, Muhabbaton Ka Shayar (“the poet of love”) by Mahmood ul Hassan, and Kiran-e-Nau by Muhammad Imran Anjum. These writers introduce Ishtiaq Ahmed and his style. Then the collection begins in the traditional way, with a Hamd in praise of Allah and a Naat in honour of the Prophet ﷺ, before moving into the love poems and ghazals that fill the rest of the book.

The contents page lists every poem by title and page, so you can dip in anywhere. It’s a good choice for readers who enjoy modern Urdu poetry with simple, heartfelt language, whether you want to read a few lines before sleep or find a verse that says what you feel.
